How do you breathe while trekking?
“How do you breathe?” is the factor that decides how you are going to end up while trekking. Whether you are feeling strong or feeling exhausted completely depends on the fact how you are breathing. The main motive is to breathe deeply, steadily and in a rhythm with your steps.
1. Breathe from your diaphragm
Avoid short chest breaths, breathe deep into your belly.
- Inhale through your nose.
- Let your abdomen expand.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth or nose. (Most preferably nose coz using your mouth makes your throat dry faster.)
This brings in more oxygen and helps you conserve energy.
2. Match your steps and your breathing.
Find a rhythm that feels comfortable to breathe.
- Easy terrain: Inhale for 3–4 steps, exhale for 3–4 steps.
- Steeper climbs: Inhale for 2 steps, exhale for 2 steps.
- Very steep sections: One breath per step if needed.
Don’t force a pattern—adjust it to your pace.
3. Slow down before you gasp
If you’re breathing heavily:
- Reduce your walking speed.
- Take shorter steps.
- Maintain a pace where you can still speak a short sentence without struggling.
Always remember this – the slowest steady pace on a trek is often the fastest overall pace.
4. At higher altitudes
As altitude increases oxygen levels decrease, hence:
- Your breathing becomes faster naturally.
- Don’t try to hold your breath.
- Take slow, deep breaths and walk more slowly than you think you need to.
- Rest briefly if you feel breathless, but avoid sitting for long in cold conditions.
5. On uphill sections
A useful technique is:
- Exhale as you push yourself upward.
- Inhale while taking the next step.
This will help you to maintain a steady rhythm.
Common mistakes you must avoid
❌ Holding your breath while climbing.
❌ Walking too fast at the beginning.
❌ Taking shallow, rapid breaths.
❌ Talking continuously during steep ascents.
Always remember this simple mantra:
Walk slow. Breathe deep. Stay steady.
This approach helps you trek longer with less fatigue and is especially useful on Himalayan Treks like Hampta Pass, Kedarkantha, Roopkund and Valley of Flowers.
