Itinerary

Day 1: Manali to Chhika (10,000ft) 2 Hours Trek

Arrival at Manali Bus stand transfer to Hotel in the forenoon. Freshen up and leave your extra luggage in the hotel. A jeep / car will take you to Jobra where the trek begins. You trek along Hampta River towards north to reach at a beautiful place called Chhika. The area is speckled with wild flowers and there are a few waterfalls just behind the campsite. You halt here for overnight stay.

Stay: Camping at Chhika

The river takes a westward turn from here and so is the route. You leave behind the tree line. Beautiful mountain meadows welcome you on the either sides of the river. The path is paved by the grass and stones and field of the wild flowers. Today’s trek ends at Balu-ra-Ghera- a flat ground beside the river Hampta.

The trekking on this day is challenging and the climb to the top of the pass (4270 mts) takes about three to four hours. From the pass one can enjoy the view of magnificent Himalayan peaks like DeoTibba, IndraAsan, IndraKila. From the top of the pass there is one hour descend to the meadows of Shea Gohru, this is a beautiful campsite on the foot of the glacier.

From here the trail descends down along the left bank of a mountain rivulet. After crossings the rivulet at two places you reach at Chhatru…. Chhatru is a small roadside tourist destination on Manali-Spiti road on the bank of the Chandra River.Drive to Chandertal Lake in vehicle. Chandertal Lake is situated at an altitude of 4300 mts. at the source of river Chandra. On the way you cover places ChhotaDara, Bara Dara, and Batal. At the foot of the Kunzam Pass you take left turn along the river to reach at Chandertal Lake. After passing some time at the lake you travel back by the same route to Chhatru. Overnight camp on the bank of Chandra River.

Preparation Guide

Physical Fitness
  • Engage in regular cardiovascular exercises like hiking, jogging, or cycling to build stamina and endurance.

  • Incorporate strength training exercises to strengthen leg muscles and core stability.

  • Practice hiking with a loaded backpack to simulate trekking conditions.

  • Plan for at least a day or two of acclimatization in Sonmarg or nearby areas before starting the trek.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol and smoking to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Ascend gradually and listen to your body’s signals to recognize symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Clothing: Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing suitable for layering, including thermal innerwear, fleece jackets, waterproof and windproof outer layers, trekking pants, and woolen socks.
  • Footwear: Invest in sturdy, well-fitted trekking boots with ankle support and good traction.
  • Gear: Bring a comfortable backpack with padded shoulder straps, a rain cover, trekking poles, a sleeping bag rated for low temperatures, a lightweight tent or shelter, a headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries, a multi-tool or knife, and a first aid kit.
  • Accessories: Carry a wide-brimmed hat or cap, sunglasses with UV protection, sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, a water bottle or hydration pack, water purification tablets or filter, quick-drying towel, and toiletries.
  • Personal Items: Don’t forget essentials like identification documents, permits, cash, camera or smartphone for capturing memories, and any prescribed medications
  • Familiarize yourself with the trekking route, terrain, and weather conditions to mentally prepare for the challenges ahead.
  • Maintain a positive attitude, stay motivated, and be adaptable to changes in the itinerary or weather conditions.
  • Embrace the spirit of adventure, connect with nature, and cherish the journey as an opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth.
  • Stay informed about weather forecasts and trail conditions before and during the trek.
  • Follow the guidance of experienced trekking guides and adhere to safety protocols at all times.
  • Stay together as a group, avoid straying off the designated trail, and be mindful of potential hazards like loose rocks, steep cliffs, or slippery surfaces.
  • Keep emergency contact information handy and communicate regularly with your trekking companions and support staff.
